Ameren Demand Response Program

Demand Response is a complicated energy-savings utility program that involves allowing the utility to take control of their constituents' thermostats to reduce energy during peak times (hottest/coolest part of the day).
Making Complex Content Simple
The goal of this project is to effectively communicate how the program operates while building trust by allowing individuals to their smart thermostats, ultimately leading to increased enrollment. After interviewing resident's and stakeholders, it was determined that the majority of the constituents do not know what the terms "peak time energy savings" or "demand response" meant. Homeowners also demonstrated feelings of certainty about utility companies controlling the temperature of their homes.
My goal was to:
-
Explain the demand response program in simple terms
-
Ensure the homeowners that their comfort in their homes will not be effected
-
Help home owners understand the rebate options when purchasing a thermostat and enrolling in the program
Simple Page Design
A simple page design with plain language to introduce the program to the utility's customers was used.
A simple stepped process and graphics were used to explain the order of operations for purchasing the thermostat and enrolling in the program.
Explainer videos were also used gain trust with the home owners and ensure that they will have a comfortable temperature in their homes at all times.

Telling a Story
Through the use of high-end imagery and positive and friendly copy, I was able to convey the message that this program and the thermostat will help improve the customer's home's comfort. Expanding accordions at the bottom of the page help users find answers to frequently asked questions to allow users to find more detailed information about this complex program and gain trust with their utility company.
